Recreational

Recreational volleyball is about getting on court, enjoying the game and finding a way to play that fits your life, whether you are new to volleyball or returning after time away.

Scottish Volleyball delivers and supports a range of recreational opportunities across Scotland. Some are led directly by us, while others are delivered locally by clubs, community groups and partners. Together, these opportunities provide accessible ways to take part in volleyball, indoors and outdoors, at different stages of your playing journey.

Local Leagues (Indoor Season)

Local Leagues are Scottish Volleyball’s indoor recreational leagues, delivered in venues across the country. They offer regular, structured game play in a social environment, without the demands of performance competition.

Local Leagues are designed for players who want to play volleyball on a consistent basis, enjoy being part of a team, and value a balance between organised fixtures and a welcoming atmosphere. Teams can be made up of friends, colleagues or club members, and leagues are open to a wide range of abilities.

Summer Sets (Summer/Grass Season)

Summer Sets are Scottish Volleyball’s outdoor recreational events, delivered on grass during the summer months. They provide short format games in a relaxed, social setting, with an emphasis on participation and enjoyment.

Summer Sets are well suited to people trying volleyball for the first time, those returning to the sport after time away, and groups looking for a flexible way to play over the summer. Events are open and inclusive, with mixed ability teams and a friendly atmosphere on and off court.

Club Based Recreational

Many volleyball clubs across Scotland offer recreational or social sessions alongside their competitive programmes. These sessions often focus on regular game play in a local setting and provide a welcoming environment for players who want to stay active and connected to the sport.

Club based recreational volleyball is a common entry point for adults who are new to volleyball, as well as a route back into the game for those who have played before.

Community & Leisure Centre Volleyball

Community centres and leisure providers may offer informal volleyball sessions as part of their local activity programmes. These sessions are typically open access and delivered in a relaxed environment, making them well suited to beginners and people returning to physical activity.

Availability and format vary by area, but community sessions often provide a low commitment way to get involved and build confidence on court.

Student & Campus Volleyball

Colleges and universities across Scotland offer recreational volleyball through Active Campus programmes, student clubs and local partnerships. Opportunities range from casual drop-in sessions to organised student leagues and social competitions.

Student and campus volleyball provides a flexible way for students to take part in the sport alongside their studies, with options to play regularly or on a more informal basis.

There is no single route into recreational volleyball. Many people first experience the sport through clubs, community sessions or campus sport before taking part in Scottish Volleyball programmes such as Local Leagues and Summer Sets. Others move between opportunities over time depending on location, season and availability.

Recreational volleyball is designed to be flexible, inclusive and responsive to people’s lives, offering different ways to play at different times.
