Perth & Kinross District Volleyball’s Recreational League Cup competition drew to a close at Perth College UHI on Sunday evening with the semi-final line-up showing two of this season’s new teams Notorious DIG and Perth College UHI.

First up was Sam Jones’ Perth UHI facing up to Jayne Cafferty’s Nae Fear and the College side got off to a positive start taking a 5-2 early lead against Nae Fear but Fear pulled back to within a point at 9-10. The score progressed to 15-13 in the College side’s favour before a run of five points without reply saw them take control of the set, eventually running out winners by 21 points to 14. The second set followed a similar pattern with UHI maintaining a slight lead at 16-14. UHI edged ahead at 19-14 but Nae Fear hit back to level the score with a stunning five-point scoring run. It was UHI who scored the final two points to secure their place in the final.

Next up was Finlay Sorrie’s Notorious DIG against Michael Donaldson’s league regulars Kinross. The first set started with the sides scoring point for point until the score reached 12 points each. The Diggers then edged ahead  to win the opening set 21-15 with the Kinross side failing to cope having a nervous, error strewn period of play. The second set saw a similar pattern of play develop with the set tied at 12 points each before the Diggers pulled away to reach the final with a 21-16 score.

So with both new sides through to the final it was certain there would be a new name on the silver trophy at the end of the evening. Strong serving and big hitting were on display as the sides pitted their wits against able opponents with the early points score showing 6 points each. The UHI side pulled ahead scoring five consecutive points which saw them take control, running out a 21-17 first set win. UHI consolidated their intentions with a stunning 11-1 second set lead which knocked the stuffing out of the Diggers and there was no way back as UHI finished with a flurry winning 21-14 to lift the silver cup.

How they lined up:

The District volleyball Leagues were due to start after the school October break but a lack of suitable hall hire availability means that this may not be possible as the league organisers’ struggle to find a two volleyball court facility within Perth & Kinross to play the necessary fixtures.
