” ‘The health of athletes, coaches, fans, officials, organisers and everyone associated with our sport remains our top priority at this stage and must therefore prevail over all other interests,’ CEV President Aleksandar Boričić said. ‘Volleyball is a team sport and we know how important it is to stick together as one team and to show solidarity with our team members. This principle becomes even more important during such a crisis. With the help of this historic ‘Marshall Plan’, we are making sure that when this imposed break ends, our Volleyball family will resume its activities with even more enthusiasm and positive energy. There is no virus or adversity that can extinguish the fire of passion that makes our hearts beat for Volleyball.’
While identifying a number of options to re-start Volleyball activities when conditions allow, the wish of the CEV leadership remains to provide as much flexibility as possible to all parties involved in order to respect the decisions and policies of the relevant international health organisations and respective national authorities across Europe.
European Cups 2020
The CEV Board of Administration agreed to cancel the remainder of the 2020 European Cups, including the CEV Champions League Volley Super Finals scheduled for May 16 in Berlin, after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic brought these competitions to a standstill in March.
Regardless of not being able to finalise the European Cups season, the Board agreed to allocate more than 80% of the anticipated prize money to the teams across the three Cups.
Moreover, the CEV Board committed already to maintain the prize money for the 2020/2021 edition of the European Cups and approved additional support to the clubs for the upcoming season.
National team competitions
The Board of Administration have cancelled the 2020 edition of the European Golden and Silver Leagues, initially scheduled for late May and June.
The plan addresses the EuroVolley 2021 qualifiers as well, with the CEV devising measures to facilitate the organisation of these home and away matches as well as identifying a slot for their possible delivery in January 2021, with a final decision to this extent taken by July 1.
As for the four age-group Championships (U17 and U19 Women, U18 and U20 Men) due to take place in 2020, the BoA members have endorsed a plan to re-schedule the qualification rounds for later in the summer. Moreover, the CEV will liaise with the organisers of the respective Final Rounds in order to find, where necessary, suitable new dates for the delivery of these events. The contingency plan includes deadlines by when the CEV will confirm the actual organisation of all these tournaments, taking into account the evolution of the pandemic as well as any changes to the current restrictions imposed by national governments to travelling, public events, etc. The CEV will provide financial support to the organisers of all age-group European Championships and qualifiers as well as to the travelling teams and introduce several reliefs for the various competitions in favour of the organisers.
Beach Volleyball
The CEV will liaise with the organisers of the World Tour events scheduled for the summer 2020 and has defined a one-month notice deadline for the eventual cancellation of such tournaments. Moreover, the CEV will re-open the bidding process for the organisation of the second as well as of the final stage of the CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup, whose eventual winners will qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.
The BoA agreed as well with the provision of financial support to the organisers and to the teams travelling to the 2020 and 2021 age-group championships as well as to several reliefs from which the organisers will benefit. ”
