250 pupils turn out for S2/3 Wishaw Festival

A staggering 55 teams turned up for the annual Wishaw S2/3 festival on Thursday. With so many schools descending on the one place, it was always going to be a challenge to get to the festival started on time. However, at 09.53 the horn sounded for the start of play.

All teams have the responsibility to organise themselves to study the order of play, ensure they are organised to play at the right time, with teams playing up to 10 matches during the course of the day. They also have to officiate, score and administer some other games in their pool. All of which they performed exceptionally through-out the day. There is no doubt that the pupils involved in the day got a lot of skills out of the day.

The main aim for day was mass participation, cooperation, competition and fair play. All of which were successfully ‘ticked.’

However, the competitive aspect does ensure that there is a winner and the winners of each pool are indicated below;

GIRLS BOYS
Pool 1 Balmont Academy Kyle Academy
Pool 2 Queensferry High School B Marr College
Pool 3 Moffat Academy Marr College B
Pool 4 Woodfarm High School Duncarig Secondary School
Pool 5 Belmont House School Kinross High School

The constant enthusiasm, organisation and commitment of the teachers and their continued ability to coach and inspire multiple teams across multiple age groups really is something to behold.

I encourage you to take a half-day off work one day next year and just come along to the festival and watch and experience this event and I assure you it will be a ½ day well spent.

With over 250 pupils taking part in the festival the spirit of the tournament was always going to be an unenviable and difficult task. Despite the fact that everyone competed in a great manor and well behaved throughout, there were two standout individuals from the day.

The Spirit of the Tournament awards went to

Alexia Melville – Queensferry High School

Daoud Sharif – Belmont House School

A massive thanks is due to Martyn Johnstone for helping to run the festival, it would be an impossible task without his dedication to the MACvolley schools programme.

You can come and watch some of these individuals play each other again at the Scottish Schools Cup Finals on Tuesday 25th March 2014 and Thursday 27th March 2014 at Calderhead High School. For more information please see HERE
