2014 Regional League kicks off in Kinross

The opening fixture of Scottish Volleyball’s Regional League took place at Loch Leven Community Campus on Monday evening when Kinross hosted Glenrothes based Team Fife.

The Kinross side had finished top of the East Central Scotland League since its inception two years ago but the tables were turned on Monday night with the Fife side taking full advantage of a youth filled local side.

Team Fife were at full strength for this one, determined to make an impact this season. Kinross, on the other hand had to rely on their youngsters along with veteran Craig Donaldson as their more experienced players were unavailable due to work commitments.

The Fife side won the toss and team captain Colin McGinley elected to serve and with devastating effect. McGinley’s serves had an immediate impact with the Fife side taking a 9-0 lead before Kinross called a time-out. This provided the home side a little respite and their play did improve for spells but the ask was too much as Team Fife strode to a 25-14 first set lead.

The second set saw Kinross take a 5-2 lead and this set was much more competitive as the home sides’ play improved. Team Fife fought back and eventually triumphed 25-20.
With victory now secured the third set was played out with the Fife side just keeping their noses in front, running out winners by 25 points to 18.

Both sides now face games against Perth, Linlithgow and Edinburgh University over the coming weeks with the Fifers now very much in the driving seat with maximum points from their opening game.
