Welcome to the first leg of our Sainsbury’s UK School Games journey.
Our adventure began with the first group of West Athletes and Coaches boarding in Troon, followed by the next group in Glasgow and finally our East contingent joined in Edinburgh. From there 48 excited Athletes, 8 ambitious Coaches, 4 hard working Team Managers and 1 proud Head of Delegation set off for Sheffield to represent Scotland at the 2011 games.
The UK School Games is a multi sport event which has taken place in the six years preceding the 2012 Olympics, and this year sees the final one in it’s current format. The games have offered up and coming athletes of school age the rich opportunity to sample an Olympic style experience as many of them prepare for very bright sporting careers ahead. Find out more about the games at www.ukschoolgames.com
Tomorrow is day one of the tournament and begins with each team being allocated court familiarization time throughout the morning. As detailed below, the competition then begins with Scotland West boys and Scotland East girls playing in the opening matches. Scotland East boys are next on court followed by Scotland West girls.
With one game under their belts, all four squads will spend their evening celebrating the official opening of the event at a ceremony held at the Motorpoint Arena beginning at 8.30pm where there will be a parade of athletes and other entertainment.
So with the players all safely tucked up in bed, the preparations are behind us now and there is only one thing left to do………‘Let’s Play Volleyball’ !
I would like to congratulate all the Scottish Athletes on their selection and offer my sincere thanks to the Coaches and Team Managers for everything they have done to prepare their squads for the event. I wish them all the very best of luck for the competition.
